Dark purple red flower buds, flowers deep red. Compact with deep green foliage. Red young growth. Best in peaty soil in full sun. Prune to rejuvenate with age. Glendoick speciality.
Kalmia latifolia, the Calico Bush. Coloured buds like miniature parasols open to flowers in May-June-July; long flowering. Glossy-leaved evergreen. Best in a peaty soil and full sun to bloom freely. Hard prune to keep compact if it outgrows its space. Ht 1-2m in 10 years. Very tough H5-6.
